Our Statement on the Atlanta Shooting

Mar 24, 2021

Cayuga Centers condemns the on-going and increasing violence against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders. Last week we witnessed another senseless tragedy. Another hate crime. Eight individuals, six of whom were Asian-American women, were murdered in Atlanta. We are calling for an end to the harassment and violence against the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community, and urge our leaders and our neighbors to stop dividing us and start uniting us.  We need to accept and protect all.

We are in a hard time. Our world has been turned upside down by the pandemic. Many of us are frustrated and scared. And, too many people look to advance themselves by placing blame and fostering fear and hate through harmful rhetoric. Much of this has targeted Asian-Americans and — not surprisingly — this has contributed to an increase in violence aimed against them. This needs to stop NOW.

Historically, when we have overcome diversity, we did it by uniting — not by turning on each other. We move ahead when we insist that all of us act from a base of decency and respect. Not only do we need to be kind, promote reconciliation ourselves, and embrace differences, but we need to insist on the same from all in our circles. We encourage you to learn more about what you can do to be an ally to Asian-American communities. Please start by reading this helpful link which lists specifics. Please take one or more of the suggested actions.
