Coronavirus and our Unaccompanied Children program: 3/16/2020

Mar 16, 2020

At this time, Cayuga Centers is continuing to provide temporary foster care and family unification services in New York City for a number of children who arrived at the Southern U.S. border unaccompanied by a parent.

We will not turn away any child in need while we have the capacity to help. Right now, expert advice from our own medical team, City, State, and Federal officials, is that with due precautions, it is safe for our program to remain open. We have taken steps to minimize staff travel and public interaction. We have enhanced our cleaning routines. Children at our learning center are being cared for in reduced groups of five or fewer. Staff and foster parents are alert for any symptoms of the virus and are prepared to respond accordingly.

We believe that children are always better off in foster care than in group facilities. This also applies to the current situation. Ultimately, decisions about whether to keep unaccompanied children at border facilities or to relocate them while the unification process is ongoing, rest with the Federal Office for Refugee Resettlement (ORR).

This is a fast-moving situation. We are monitoring all the latest guidance and regulations, and when circumstances change, we will adapt as required to keep our staff, partners, foster parents and the children we serve safe and healthy.
