Coronavirus and our Unaccompanied Children program: 4/6/2020

Apr 6, 2020

Cayuga Centers is currently still providing temporary foster care and family reunification services in New York City for a small number of children who arrived at the Southern U.S. border unaccompanied by a parent, before the recent heightening of restrictions in New York.

In line with restrictions and guidelines introduced by the Governor of New York, the Mayor of New York City and the Federal Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), we have moved our daily learning center activities to a remote learning basis. This means that all children in our care are being cared for in their foster homes while we work to reunite them with a parent or sponsor. We have introduced extra supports to our foster parents to help them at this time.

Our case managers and clinicians are still in regular contact and holding sessions via telephone and teleconferencing. Minors also have access to their legal service providers and youth advocates. Our medical department is on call for foster parents and youth 24 hours 7 days a week. Where an in-person visit is unavoidable we are following all guidelines about personal protection and social distancing. Staff and foster parents have been given advice on being alert for any symptoms of the virus and are prepared to respond accordingly.
