Cayuga Centers Through the Years

For 170 years Cayuga Centers has been paving new ways in serving families with no intentions of stopping. One hundred and seventy years of serving has given us many opportunities to introduce diverse programs to communities across the U.S. which lends themselves perfectly to our rich history that’s been writing itself since 1852.

First established as the Cayuga Asylum for Destitute Children in 1852, we served orphans and children whose families were unable to care for them. By the early 1950s, we had since grown out of our original location, settled at 101 Hamilton Avenue in Auburn, NY, changed our name to Cayuga Home for Children, and began introducing new programs and eyeing new locations for expansion.

We introduced a Residential Treatment Center program, followed by our Community-Based Interventions programs. Next in 1994, we implemented our Services for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities program followed by our Treatment Family Foster Care program in 2002 which, over the years, took us to New York City, Florida, Delaware, and most recently Pennsylvania in 2021. Next stop was going national, which our Home Study and Post Release Services program helped us accomplish.

In 2022, our 170th year, we continue to grow – seeking to serve new areas and underserved populations. We are proud of our past but cannot rest on our laurels. So many people need our services. We have an obligation to continue to grow and improve so that we can serve them. What we do tomorrow is more important than what we did yesterday.

“As the world changed, so has Cayuga Centers. We have met the greater needs of children and families by changing, growing, embracing evidence-based and research-informed interventions, and by never wavering in our commitment to providing quality services and treatment.”

Edward Myers Hayes

President & Chief Executive Officer
