Aug 18, 2016

Canandaigua Town Supervisor Pam Helming visited the Cayuga Centers campus August 16, 2016 to learn about agency programs and tour the campus.

Diane (Dee Dee) Schenck, Vice President for Community Partnerships, welcomed Supervisor Helming and gave an overview of the agency’s program areas: Residential Treatment, Treatment Family Foster Care, Community-Based Interventions, Services for People with Developmental Disabilities, and Transitional Foster Care for Unaccompanied Children. Recent agency growth includes the expansion of foster care to Delaware and Florida.

Kelly Ware, Director of Case Planning and After Care, described the individualized care given to each youth in Residential Treatment, and spoke of Treatment Family Foster Care, which includes many of the same services including individual and family therapy, but provided in a family care setting.

The agency’s home and community-based interventions work to prevent out-of-home placements or can work effectively with youth and families before, during and after discharge from a facility to ease the transition back home.  Cindi Pagan, Vice President of Community-Based Interventions, and Jessica Whitwood, Director of Cayuga Resiliency program, explained the agency’s success in helping families safely keep their children at home as a result of these interventions.

Lexie Shutter, Director of SPwDD Support Services, explained the Respite Program, which gives a break for caregivers of those with developmental disabilities, while engaging the consumer in social activities. The program can play an important role in helping families care for their loved one at home.  The group toured the program space before finishing with a visit to the gymnasium and health office.
