People on the Move - New Director for Florida Foster Care Program
Nov 30, 2015
Auburn, NY – Cayuga Centers President and CEO Edward Myers Hayes recently announced the hiring of Lisa Cohen, LMHC, as Program Director for the agency’s Palm Beach County Foster Care Program. Cohen has been a Mental Health Counselor and Board Certified Art Therapist for nearly fifteen years, working across the country with various populations. Originally from the mid-west, she has lived in South Florida for the past ten, bringing her experience and exposure from other diverse regions into the area.
Although she has provided therapy and support to individuals in hospice, schools, cancer support centers, recovery programs and hospitals, working in foster care has always struck a special place. Cohen said, “I especially enjoy working with foster parents, helping them to feel supported and teaching them the necessary tools to provide the ultimate care for the foster children in their homes.”
She says she has been honored to see amazing changes occur within children, through the work and love of the foster parents. By using and exposing clients to the process of art therapy, Cohen has also been able to bring a creative and alternative element of self-expression into the foster homes. This teaching allows the children to express their feelings and trauma, while the foster parents learn other ways of communication. Cohen says she is thrilled to join Cayuga Centers, and to help develop a strong, supportive program in Palm Beach County.
